Situated around 120 miles west of the Italian coast,Sardinia is a beautiful island boasting stunning landscapes, lush inland mountains, picturesque harbours and fishing villages.
Sardinia is separated from Corsica by the straits of Bonifacio. It is also Italy’s third largest Region, with 1.6 million people .
Sardinia’s shores have seen the arrival of Phoenicians; Romans; Genoa’s; Pisa’s; Arabs; Spanish and finally the House of Savoy .
Archaeological remains suggest Sardinia has been inhabited for around 4,000 years, and intriguing stone towers remains (Nuraghi) there are still 7,000 Nuraghi scattered around the island.
The different cultures have all contributed to the art, architecture and cultural life of Sardinia and evidence is scattered throughout the island: prehistoric dwellings, ancient rock-cut tombs, and Romanesque churches.
Sardinia way of life is extremely laid-back. There are many typically Italian features to life on the island, but the Sardinians have kept a strong sense of their own identity, expressed through their distinctive dialect, music, unique costumes, and cuisine. Many speak the Sardo dialect, and in Alghero Catalan is often spoken, road signs are still in dual language. There are over three hundred festivals held each year, ranging from medieval pagan rituals to religious processions.
The island is divided into four provinces, Cagliari – Nuoro – Oristano – Sassari.
